The Love, Like, and Hate of Music

Hi i am Iriana foster. I have lived in Union South Carolina for my whole life. I would not consider myself to be a musician, of course, I had a phase where I wanted to be the cool girl who played guitar and was in a rock band. Needless to say, I am not her. although playing music didn't work out as expected, I am an active music listener. throughout the years I have come across types of music that make me cry, feel happy or cringe.

Music is an expression for me. my taste tends to change depending on what my soul needs at the time. Sometimes my soul needs to cry. This tends to be the music that is personal to me. Sometimes my soul needs to be happy and other times I simply hate the music. As of now, I am listening to upbeat Pop with a mix of R&B. this type of music is a genre that I like. the first songs that I found on my own as a kid were very energetic and upbeat.

"I don't do drugs" by Doja Cat. Doja Cat has a style of music that is upbeat lycically diverse and in other words good as hell. The melody is consistent throughout and the beat changes depending on the chorus of the rapping verse. The meaning of the song is wanting someone or something that isn't nessacerily good for you but are addictive at the same time. When listening to the song there is a outspace kind of vibe that make you feel free. The album is called planet her and all of the songs sound as though they go together. Righ now my go to playlist consist of csongs that are similar to this one. The mood is happy and upbeat .

"Take It One Day at A Time" Sam Smith created a masterpiece, as he usually does. This song is one that sooths my soul and makes sense of the world for the three minutes it is playing. "Grab a bottle and take it one day at a time" is a repeated lyric in the chorus. The song is about complicationhow things in life go wrong but the moral is that you are only human so and there are only 24 hours in a day. On days where i fel like nith is going right or i haven't done anything good enough this songis a reminder that everything will be ok.
Pop ballads tend to be my soul serahing music. I love this genre of music because the music is real. The lyrics cater to the soul not the image.

"My Cat" -Jack of Jill. I simply hate this song. I prefer to listen to music with a story. there could be a story behind this song and I just don't get it, but this is not a piece of music that i would listen to. "My cat is amazing", this lyruc is one that sticks with me in an annoying way. There is a good consistent tempo behind the lyric that i don't hate as much. I first heard this song on a car ride with my sister. I usually don't mind rock music or pop rock but this is one song that i can't vibe with.

I feel like this is a pretty accurate representation of my music taste right now. there are plenty more songs i could talk about and explain why they are important to me. Music is contaly changing and i am excited to learn about music that i have never been exposed to. In order to change with the world ,you must become part of it. I want to venture outside of myself and see the full perspective. That is my goal in everything i listen to and do.

  1. Hi Bekka!! I absolutely love any Big Time Rush song. I'm always excited when I find that someone also loves them as much as I do! During this summer I can tell you the amount of time I play "Windows Down". To say listening to them and it just brings back memories is an understatement. Not only does listening to Big Time Rush bring back memories but it also makes me remember my feelings during the time, how much laughter they brought me and even the crush on James I had. You really chose some great songs because you even made me interested in K-Pop when I've always shot it down in the past.

  2. Let me try this again. My copy and paste skills are apparently out of whack. Hi Iriana!! I totally agree that music can help you understand and push through your emotions. It took me a very long time to understand that I can listen to music and it will help me express my emotions. While I have had a little music experience by playing the flute and a little bit of time on the guitar, I can't write or do anything like that. I love when I am driving to play meaningful music in my car and just go through the motions. Listening to some songs will bring up good time or memories and sometime other songs with do the total opposite. I totally agree with needing to let the soul cry sometimes. (And sorry about all the comments my computer went copy and paste crazy for some reason.)

  3. For one I totally understand and agree with you how music can express your emotions and your feelings. That Sam Smith song was absolutely perfect, that I added to my library of songs on my phone. I also agree with how you said music has to have a meaning behind it because it should. But good job on the blog I really like it.

  4. I personally use music for many different purposes, some emotionally some just for fun, so I can get behind that notion that music is an expression of self. I must say that I wasn't vibing with that Sam Smith song but when I heard more of it I really did get into it. Finally that JoJ song was utterly horrible and should be purged from my memory.

  5. Hey Iriana, I agree that music is a form of expression, that can excite emotions based on what type of song you’re listening to. Secondly, I also enjoy the song “I don’t do drugs” by Doja Cat. I find Doja Cat to be an interesting artist, since her songs are typically upbeat, catchy, and simply fun to listen to. I also enjoyed “Take it One Day at a Time” by Sam Smith, I also find these lyrics to be meaningful and encouraging. I agree that most pop songs tend to have more relatable and sentimental lyrics, which are especially comforting during difficult days. Lastly, as someone who especially loves rock songs, I can agree that the song “My Cat” by Jack and Jill does not have meaningful lyrics. Although I do enjoy the tempo and beats in this song. I would not choose to listen to this type of song in hopes of seeking any type of deeper meaning as it seems to be a shallow type of song.

  6. Doja Cat and Sam Smith are both great artists. I liked the HER album a lot, and I follow a good amount of Sam Smith's music. If you want more like Sam Smith, Alessia Cara is really good.
