DooWop!!!

 What Is DooWop?

Doowop is a genre of music that was popular during the 1940s and 50s. the way to distinguish the doo-wop sound is the close harmony and more particularly the use of nonsense words that correspond with the beat or rhythm with the words. Doowop is also known as a sub-category of rhythm and blues, wh9ich were popular genres during this time. The sound of Doowop takes inspiration from blues, jazz, and swing.

How was Doowop created?

Surprisingly, the creation of Doowop had nothing to do with famous musicians at that time or fancy recording labels. Doowop was created by African American teenagers. While swing music was on a rise so was segregation. The black community was separated and given fewer opportunities than white people, this even extended to the music scene. Since they couldn’t buy expensive instruments or perform with famous groups, Doowop was born. Born in alleyways, barbershops, living rooms, anywhere that was safe and allowed creativity.

in place of instrumental backups, singers used their voices to create sounds and words. these words made a song sound complete even without the technology and instruments of today.

Who were some of the first Doo-wop groups?

The Orioles were one of the first doo-wop groups. the lead was Sunny Till.

the Drifters (loveeeeee themmmm!!!!)

these songs have a few things in common such as the harmonies, the group effort, nonsense phrases, and simple lyrics. Most doo-wop songs are about love.

DooWop Today?

Doo-wop, although isn't prevalent today, is very common to hear traces of the sensational genre in today's pop, rock, or soul music. Doowop changed the meaning of music. there are more than complex instruments and professional recording studios. music was fun and easy. I believe that a lot of pop ballads were influenced by Doowop. no there isn't many nonsense phrases but the simple lyrics and harmony are similar.

Ariana Grande's yours truly album is beautiful and has an old-school feel to it. the whole album incorporates the beauty of many old-school genres.

How did Doowop Change the World?

Doo-wop was developed during a very scary and hard time in America, for African Americans that is. racism, stereotypes, segregation were all prevalent in American society. Doowop proved something. Doowop gave hope and showed that perfection isn't important in creating art. I am convinced that without the doo-wop sensation, the present day would not be the same and music defiantly wouldn't be as good.

Some DooWops that I love.

  1. Hey Iriana! Thank you so much for sharing with us the doowop! This is such cool music! I love how it has a lot of connection with many different types of music! It follows kind of the blues music, but is a little bit more upbeat in some aspects.

  2. I love that Doowop was created by teenagers, taking what they could out of what they had and turning it into something incredible. Listening to the actual music makes me want to sway along with the beat lol. And I can kind of hear some Doowop sounds in Ariana Grande's song as well! That's really interesting!

  3. Its been a long time since I've heard of DooWop, barely listened to any of the music but I did hear of the name before. Listening to Save The Last Dance For Me made me forget the time a bit and just lean back and listen to the beautiful sounds and lyrics. Ariane Grande's song Daydreaming definitely felt a bit bluesy.

  4. I like how do wop still has some influence today. The fact that it was created by teenagers is also super cool and makes it that much more impressive that they were so young and it became as popular as it was.
